What is a repeat prescription?
A repeat prescription is for a medicine you take regularly for a long term condition. Your GP agrees it can be reissued, so you do not need an appointment each time.
If you have just started a new medicine for certain long term conditions, ask us about the New Medicine Service. Examples include high blood pressure, asthma and type 2 diabetes.
This service is free on the NHS. Our pharmacist checks in with you over the first few weeks to see how the medicine is working for you.
Most repeat prescriptions now go through the NHS Electronic Prescription Service. Your GP sends your prescription straight to us once you have nominated Theydon Bois Pharmacy. You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time.

How to order your repeat prescription in Theydon Bois
Electronic repeat dispensing
With electronic repeat dispensing (eRD), your GP sends us a batch of prescriptions in one go. The batch can cover up to 12 months. You do not need to reorder each time.
Before each supply, we check you still need every item and that nothing has changed. Your GP decides whether eRD is right for you.

Running low or out of medicine
If you have run out of regular medicine and cannot wait for your GP, speak to our pharmacist. In some cases we can make an emergency supply of a medicine you have been prescribed before.
The pharmacist will need to speak to you and be satisfied you need it straight away. Bring your repeat slip or the medicine packaging if you can. The pharmacist decides how much to supply, usually enough to last until you get a new prescription.
Some medicines cannot be supplied this way. These include most controlled drugs, such as strong painkillers and some medicines for nerve pain. There may be a charge when you ask us directly.
If we are closed, you can get an emergency prescription through NHS 111 . Use NHS 111 online or call 111. NHS 111 can refer you to a pharmacy for an urgent supply through the NHS Pharmacy First service.
Our pharmacist assesses each person individually. Emergency supplies and Pharmacy First treatment will not be suitable for everyone.

Medication reviews
If your repeat slip says a medication review is due, book it with your GP practice. Your GP may not issue more medicine until the review is done. You can also talk to our pharmacist about your medicines at any time, in our private consultation room.

01. How do I get repeat prescriptions?

05. What if my medicine is a controlled drug?
Your GP can send most controlled drug prescriptions to us electronically, like any other medicine. Some, such as strong painkillers, must be collected within 28 days of the date on the prescription. Whoever collects them may be asked for ID. These medicines cannot go on electronic repeat dispensing.
06. How long does a repeat prescription take?
Please order at least 7 days before you run out. Your GP practice usually needs 2 to 3 working days to approve your request. We then need time to get your medicine ready. We will text you when it is ready to collect. If you cannot collect, we deliver free of charge.
07.Can someone else collect my prescription?
Yes, a family member, friend or carer can collect your medicine for you. They may be asked for your name and address so we give them the right prescription. For some controlled drugs, they may also be asked for ID. If nobody can collect, we deliver free of charge.
08. Do I have to pay for my prescription?
NHS prescription charges apply in England unless you are exempt. Many people do not pay, for example children, people aged 60 and over, and people with certain medical conditions. If you need a lot of medicine, a prescription prepayment certificate can save you money. Ask our team if you are not sure.
